To follow up our last list, in which we discussed the best queer movies and series of the year, this list instead turns to a medium which queer people have used as a mode of expression for longer. saw a cast of characters, new and aged, join the queer literary canon. New queer voices from around the world were heard, from Irish and Nigerian to Russian and Scottish. Old favourites fancy Derek Jarman and Paul B. Preciado came back with novel revolutionary writing. Queer suffering, verb, space, and happiness can be found within the pages below, whether explored through fiction, dystopia, essays, memoir, and theory.

It was another great year for LGBTQ books, as evidenced by the sprawling list of 65 standout titles across every genre published by Casey Stepaniuk earlier this month. Her list is a great display of the range and depth of the year&#;s top queer books. But I wanted to zoom in a bit and offer a personal list, one narrowed down from my own stack of queer books I worked my way through over the past year. I thought it would be fun to do a ranked list of the 12 queer novels that stood out to me this year. And by &#;fun,&#; I mean pleasurably agonizing. This was not an easy list to put together. There are several novels that almost made the cut and might even be just as worthy of a spot on the list but were nudged out for some abstract reason that would be difficult for me to perfectly explain. What I like about this terminal 12 is that they&#;re all very distinct novels from one another, even as some of them can easily be position into conversation with one another. Together, they form a thrilling tapestry of my year in queer reading.

Gay books are not new to the market, but most were not well-known or readily obtainable at our local bookstores a couple of years ago. But because of social media applications like Tiktok, more queer books are coming to the surface. Queer titles of various genres are being read and recommended by thousands of people on the internet. LGBTQ+ people are not only being represented in books but our stories are also being loved by all kinds of people from around the world.

Tiktok’s “for you” page displays content unique to the user’s interests and there is actually a niche in Tiktok that bookworms have created. This is called #BookTok where diverse readers share their book recommendations, ratings, and reviews through imaginative videos. Of course, as a bookworm who also happens to be queer, a couple of #BookTok videos have landed on my for you page. Watching these #BookTok videos has led me to fill up my shopping cart with more books than I could possibly browse in a year! Of course, I&#;m going to be sharing them with you guys.
