Sioux Falls’ first gay bar was opened in by Gary “Bart” Bartunek. Bart was born September 16, near Menno and graduated from Brandon High School in He was active in drama and debate there and these interests followed to his post-high institution experience at Sioux Falls College. He moved to the Twin Cities for a while after college, but returned to Sioux Falls after some time experiencing a more open gay culture there. A law in St. Paul that prohibited discrimination against gays and lesbians was overturned in This event steeled his will. Bart decided there would be no more hiding who he was. He returned to Sioux Falls soon thereafter.

In Sioux Falls in , LGBTQ+ people would gather at a number of hard liquor bars downtown, but the space was shared with straight patrons. Yes, Club David is still going to be an LGBTQ+-friendly bar after changing ownership May 1,

That's the word from Stacy Newcomb, president of the company that owns Parker's Bistro, Icon Lounge and DaDa Gastropub, as well as recently-purchased Club David.

Newcomb said the previous owner of Club David never explicitly advertised the club as a "gay bar," but rather, people in Sioux Falls who frequented the club started calling it as such because it was a welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community.

After all, there's space in the club for drag performers to obtain ready for shows, the club regularly hosts drag shows year-round, and has hosted and plans to host several events this Pride month alone.

"Absolutely, we aren't going to alter anything about the business or the people that like to come there," she said. "We hope to continue the clientele that comes to David's, and we hope to attract unused people, too."
