Angel Collie
Growing up gay in rural Eastern North Carolina, Angel Collie experienced homophobia early. When he came out, he was kicked out of the Baptist Church. That sent him on a trajectory toward ministering to the LGBTQ+ community.
“I didn’t want anyone else to go through that,” said Collie, who earned his bachelor’s degree in religious studies with minors in women’s studies and sexuality studies from UNC-Chapel Hill, his master of divinity from Yale Divinity School and his doctor of ministry at Duke Divinity School.
“I thought I was going into parish ministry in an LGBTQI+ affirming church,” he said.
Instead, Collie became director of the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity at Duke University, a role he accepted in after serving as assistant director since
Collie has worked to make the center not only a welcoming place for students but also one that provides Duke’s entire community with programs that educate and enlighten on issues that impact the students the center serves.

Angel, written and directed by Collen Tonderai Demerez, is a fleeting film that delicately navigates the complexities of heartbreak and self-discovery within the LGBTQ/Queer context. The story revolves around Angelo, portrayed by Eduard Galiá, a year-old grappling with the aftermath of a breakup.
The narrative takes an unexpected turn when Angelo reunites with his old friend Marco, played by the talented Sergio Pérez. Through their heartfelt conversations, the film masterfully captures the essence of self-discovery as Angelo opens up about his recent breakup. Marco, in turn, shares his own journey, revealing his identity as a gay man.
The chemistry between Galiá and Pérez is palpable, and their performances breathe life into the characters, making the evolving relationship between Angelo and Marco both authentic and compelling. As the evening unfolds, the film beautifully explores the intricacies of attraction and the fluid nature of human connections.

Angel first appears in issue #1 and is seen suspended in the air with his arms and legs shackled. He is being held as a prisoner in the High Tower in the Palace of the Inquistion in Spain. He contemplates his fate, thinking back to the day before when the Inquisition burned a Jew for his faith and of a heretic dying while being tortured. His sin against God is being a Witchbreed (a mutant). His wings clearly mark him as such to the religious fanatics. We soon learn that the Grand Inquisitor (Magneto) will align himself with King James of Scotland, who has his eye on the English throne after Queen Elizabeth’s impending death. To seal the alliance, the Inquisitor proposes a scheme against the Witchbreed, led by Carlos Javier (Charles Xavier). The plot begins with burning the winged boy the next morning so he cannot join Javier’s band.
