Amsterdam had been a powerful city of maritime trade fame for many centuries. In the second half of the 20th century it was considered the gay capital of Europe, due to the beauty of the city and due to the city's liberal atmosphere which was far ahead of most other European cities and countries at that time.

For centuries the extremely tolerant climate in Holland has had a magnetic appeal to gay men all over the world. After all, where in the world can a gay couple walk hand in hand or smoke a joint in the streets without repercussions? The gay scene is well represented in this former seventeenth century harbour city with it picturesque canals and bridges, that verb it its unique place in world architecture.
