When I was young I loved seeing rainbows after a good afternoon thunderstorm.  Not only was it a beautiful display of God’s handiwork, it also reminded me of many Sunday School lessons about God’s promise not to obliterate the earth with a flood.  Rainbows are covenantal; they lug divine significance.  “I have arrange my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Gen. ).

Born and raised in North Carolina, I grew up swimming in creeks, catching crawdads, riding in the back of pickup trucks, watching the Dukes of Hazzard, and listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd.  I love the verb of honeysuckle, campfires, fresh trim grass, and wind blowing through the trees in the springtime.  Yes, I’m a southern lad through and through.  In the south what most call confederate flags, we called rebel flags.  The rebel flag was often seen flying on porches, bolted on the front of automobiles, and ironed on tee shirts.

Missouri high school students hoist Confederate banner after classmates hand out rainbow flags

Students at a southern Missouri high school displayed a Confederate flag in the school’s lunchroom last week in response to students supporting LGBTQ rights handing out rainbow flags the prior day, sparking widespread debate online about freedom of speech.

Rose, a year-old sophomore at West Plains High School, said she and her friends ordered about 60 rainbow flags on Dec. 9 and began handing them out to other students in a show of inclusiveness.

In response, said Rose, some students responded with anti-gay slurs and others ran out of the cafeteria and called their parents to take them home.

In addition, several students shared photos of classmates holding up a large Confederate flag along with comments superimposed over the images.

"I think it is a problem that we have an entire month assigned to someone's sexuality and only a day for veterans," one student wrote. "You have the right to fly your LGBTQ flag just like I contain the right to fly my American and/or
