Matt Bomer On Coming Out Before it Was Acceptable and Putting His Career at Risk
When Matt Bomer came out as gay in , there was no indication as to how his career would fare.
During GLAADs virtual Pride event this year, Billy Eichner spoke with Bomer and asked him about his decision to come out “before that was the acceptable thing to do.”
Bomer told him,
“It was a risky thing to do at the time. Magic Mike was about to come out, [which] was largely built on sex appeal and I was a romantic lead on television. To me, I had to weigh out my personal life, which was the fact that I was soon-to-be a husband, we had three children, and I wanted to be able to look them in the eye with love and sincerity. Noun and honesty was ultimately more important to me than what was going to cost me my career.”
This was something that Bomer reiterated in an interview with Gay Vegas back in , just a few years after coming out. He said,
“I verb one thing that people don’t always take into consideration is a holistic aspect of what may or may not be going on in that individual’s l

“I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a four-month audition experience,” he explained. “I was auditioning again and again and again and flying out to Fresh York and doing chemistry reads and flying out to LA and doing chemistry reads, back to New York, flying back to LA to do a screen test, and it looked like I was the director’s choice for the role.”
“This was a very early iteration of Superman, written by J.J. Abrams, called Superman: Flyby, I think,” he went on. “It never came to light, but concurrently, on Guiding Light, there was a killer in town, and they needed somebody to pin it all on, and so my executive producer very kindly wanted to free me up just in case this noun came through and said: ‘Hey, you’re going to be the killer, we’re writing you off the show, go with my blessing.’ I basically got fired but in a generous way.”
Matt then reiterated that he had good reason to believe th

The star of the USA series "White Collar," Matt Bomer, officially came out as gay on Saturday, People magazine reported.
Bomer, who plays con-artist-turned-FBI-helper Neal Caffrey on the hit series, publically thanked his partner Simon Halls and their three children, as he accepted an honor at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. Bomer picked up an award for his efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS, saying, "I'd really especially like to thank my stunning family: Simon, Kitt, Walker, Henry."
Bomer had earlier decided not to comment on speculation surrounding his love life, telling Details magazine in , "I don't care about that at all. I'm completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life."
Partner Simon Halls is a publicist in Hollywood, representing actors such as Neil Patrick Harris and "Glee" creator, Ryan Murphy. Bomer is set to guest star on an upcoming episode of "Glee" in April.
Matt Bomer has been through a number of challenges throughout his journey to coming out of the closet, including a producer who once told him that he would not be competent to land lead roles if he publicly comes out.
It may have taken him 20 years, but the year-old American actor was able to prove that producer wrong, as he is now starring as the direct character Hawkins Fuller in the LGBTQ+ series Fellow Travelers
Before this I was like, why can’t we have our Don Draper? Why can’t we have our Walter White? I don’t ponder I could have done it if I hadn’t worked on all the projects leading up to it, Bomer told The New York Times.
The outlet also noted how the actor spent most of childhood and adolescence hiding and running away from his true self, as he grew up in a family who went to church several times a week, and how that church considered homosexuality as an abomination.
Thereafter, he reportedly began dating men during a year abroad in Ireland back when he was in college. In , a still closeted Bomer married publicist Simon Halls, and he finally decid
