About Mount Gay Master Select
Mount Gay Distillery is located in Barbados. The brand dates all the way back to and is said to be one of the oldest rum houses in the world. The Distillery, initially named Mount Gilboa, was renamed at the turn of the 19th century, adopting distillery manager Sir John Gay Alleyne’s namesake.
Today the distillery produces high-quality rum using the best ingredients, which includes coral-filtered water, a combination of naturally-occurring yeast and their proprietary strain. They employ a combination of pot and column stills, blending together the intense aromas and flavors of the first with the smoothness of the second. Over the past 4 decades they have had 4 Master Blenders, the current one being Trudiann Branker. The spirit matures in American Whiskey, Bourbon, and Cognac oak casks, with others being brought in for various special editions. Mount Gay is home to the largest stock of aged rum in Barbados.

When I was thinking out my spirit review of , I had a section called the biggest surprises of my year. I identified two big surprises. The first was the considerable quality of the blended whiskies I enjoyed. There were whiskies from lesser-known Scottish, Bourbon and Irish Distilleries. I loved the Wemyss blended whiskies the Treacle Chest and Spice King both surprised me with their quality taste and complexity. Both create exceptional mixers especially the Spice King which delivered an exceptional Old Fashioned, the best I have ever tasted.
The Irish blend was from the talented Walsh Distillery where both the Irishman and Writers Tears blends of copper pot stills and copper column stills were really adj. As for the Bourbon blended whisky. My top choice was Noahs Mill from Willet but there were many blended whiskies which I loved courtesy of my Bourbon Advent Calendar. Many Bourbon blends offer much more flavour than their single competitors.
My second big surprise was the quality of sipping Rums. I have tended to enjoy rum in cocktails.

A Master-ful Rum: Mount Gay Master Select
The high end of the rum market in America is much less plentiful than the lofty end of the whisky market. Blame it on consumer demand (or lack thereof), or other factors, the reality is that its pretty hard to find an extensive selection of super premium options in this category.
Which is why Im always excited when a new super premium rum is released even if that rum is just the annual edition of an ongoing series.
On that note, I recently got my hands on the newest edition of Mount Gays MasterSelect, which was released in February. This years release contains rums aged between 10 and 30 years and retails for about $If you dont recall hearing about Master Select previously, its because this product was previously known as Old Cask Selection.
Same product, new name (and new bottle). But, it is still, according to Mount Gay, the distillerys rarest rum available.
